On Friday 24th May 2002, an email was sent from my computer to my entire address list advertising a get rich quick scheme. This email also contained a virus that caused it to be sent to some people up to 13 times. My mail box was full, mostly with mailings from people having a giggle at my expense [no problem] but from a few people who voiced their displeasure and requested to be removed from my mailing list. For 36 hours I lost sleep and ate little. I had been foolish but most of all I had upset a lot of people. This truly was THE WORST thing that has ever happened to me in business.
On Sunday morning 26th May, I received an email which turned my stomach upside down and inside out. A gentleman who had seen me speak at a workshop questioned my integrity and accused me of not being the person I claimed to be. I was devastated and truly considering giving up my business and getting "a real job". What if he was right? After all I have been spouting this stuff out for so long now perhaps I had, as I did in 1986, become complacent with my position. Worst of all I was not walking the talk. It was time for a reality check. What good could I find in this one?
Then they started coming in; the messages of support; the messages saying "tut tut", "there but for the grace of God..." and even a couple of " Let he who is without sin..." type messages!
After all who does walk the talk 24/7?
I know a doctor who smokes
I know a driving instructor who speeds
I know a vicar who swears, sometimes
I know a postmen who uses email
I know a fire-fighter who doesn't close all doors at night
And now I know a personal development trainer who sometimes does something negative!
I allowed a foolish email to go out from my computer. Now I have a new server - and it's free. The truth is, I am really looking forward to the lessons I expect to learn from this mistake - AND I have a new workshop!
All because I allowed a foolish email to leave my computer.
